This September Freeform is Giving Us 30 Days of Disney

Freeform is absolutely one of my favorite channels once back to school starts. We usually get 31 Days of Halloween, Countdown to Christmas and then 25 Days of Christmas. But this year Freeform has decided to make the month of September a little more magical by presenting us with 30 Days of Disney. If you cannot guess from the name, all September long on Freeform they will be airing some of our favorite Disney classics. Freeform is the channel my boys first saw The Lion King on, and since Moana is no longer on Netflix they will be super excited to watch it when it airs in September. Continue Reading →

Did it Live Up to the Hype? #AllThatisBack – Season Premiere of All That

When I found out All That was coming back, I didn’t know how I should feel. 2019 is basically 1999 all over again and some people hate it. I on the other hand am reveling in all that is my childhood. At 8:29 I turned off Disney Junior, and I told my 4 year old to prepare to watch something REALLY GOOD (I was hoping). I was not about to miss the season premiere of All That.

Next Friday Nola Darling is Back in Season 2 of She’s Gotta Have It!

When the trailer for season 2 of She’s Gotta Have It dropped earlier this month I was SO excited. I’ll admit my focus pretty much all of the month of May has been consumed by Disney and Aladdin so I should’ve shared this sooner but, better late than never! I first learned about She’s Gotta Have it when I attended Curlfest in 2017. AND I got to meet Spike Lee in person! It was amazing to even be in the presence of that kind of creative energy.

What is Going on in Casting Over at Mixed-ish?

The official trailer for Mixed-ish was released a few days ago and well…. a lot of people are confused. Before we get into all of that, if you don’t know then Mixed-ish is the prequel to ABC hit tv series Black-ish. I initially spoke about my thoughts with my co-hosts a few weeks ago on The Brown Side of Disney. While I am excited for Mixed-ish to be giving it another go at sharing the black experience from yet another perspective, I’m kinda turned off by the name. Though I get it. They have a thing going so why stop a good thing. So I may be able to excuse the name thing. But then.. oh but then, ABC released the official trailer for Mixed-ish the other day. I’ll let you guys take a look yourself.

Mixed-ish Synopsis

In “mixed-ish,” Rainbow Johnson recounts her experience growing up in a mixed-race family in the ‘80s and the constant dilemmas they had to face over whether to assimilate or stay true to themselves. Bow’s parents Paul and Alicia decide to move from a hippie commune to the suburbs to better provide for their family. As her parents struggle with the challenges of their new life, Bow and her siblings navigate a mainstream school in which they’re perceived as neither black nor white. This family’s experiences illuminate the challenges of finding one’s own identity when the rest of the world can’t decide where you belong.

Let me start off by saying I LOVE the trailer. And the concept if the show itself is exciting. I cannot wait to see the world through young Bow’s eyes. And it will be interesting to see how Mixed-ish handles topics such as race, colorism and other controversial issues. Black-ish does a good job of handling all these things in a way that is real, and not too cheesy. But I couldn’t help but notice a couple of things odd about the casting.

Mixed-ish Casting is Just Sloppy

I LOVE Tika Sumpter… LOVE LOVE LOVE! But this was just sloppy ya’ll. Are they telling me that as Bow’s mother aged she got lighter? What exactly happened. I have seen people talking about this “reverse Aunt Viv” all over social media. Black-ish did you guys think we wouldn’t notice? On one hand it makes me sad because we fight so hard for representation for darker skinned women in the media. But this wasn’t it. This was not one of those times. This was sloppy AF and I’m disappointed.

I’m also a little leery about the casting of the younger version Rainbow’s siblings Johan and Santamonica. While it’s not as bad and blatantly obvious as Alicia Johnson, it still made me raise an eyebrow. Everyone just looks so…. different. Either way, like I said originally I am excited for another “ish” spinoff and I can’t wait to see where Mixed-ish takes us.

Mixed-ish is coming soon to Tuesday nights on ABC. Are you going to be tuning in?

So We’re Just NOT Going to Talk About the Little Black Girl in the Roseanne Reboot?

 Source: ABC

Source: ABC

We’ve gotten a couple sneak peaks of the show and there have been soooo many #QTNA. Dans alive? Where’s David? How the heck are they casting both Becky’s? How are they going to address the whole “all of this has been made up” thing that they just ended the series with? Do we REALLY need to mention Trump (ok maybe that’s just my question)?

But there’s also a lot buzz around some of the new characters. If you do a quick search for new characters in the reboot you’ll find many a post about Mark, Darlene and David’s 9 year old son that dresses like a girl. Countless articles address the gender nonconforming Conner kid and I think it’s going to be interesting to see how his character unfolds in the season. But if you haven’t seen any pictures of the upcoming revival and just caught the release of the new opening sequence the other day you were probably just as surprised as I was.

D.J., Roseanne and Dan’s son also has a child in the upcoming series. Mary is played by Jayden Rey and the teenaged, Nick @ Nite loving insomniac in me couldn’t help but feel excited when I saw her beautiful brown face bouncing around the Conner table in the opening sequence. I’m honestly sad that she hasn’t gotten as much buzz as other newcomers because I think the introduction of a black girl to the Conner cast is EXTREME for the show. I clearly remember the episode way way back in the day where D.J. wanted to quit his school play because he didn’t want to kiss his black classmate Gina. The episode widely addressed prejudice & of course I remember it clearly.

I’ll admit, prior to finding out about Jayden Rey’s role I wasn’t all that excited for the reboot because I just don’t have time to give anything Trump-esque my energy but I’m interested to see how Mary is going to fit into the family. I’m praying praying praying hard that Roseanne doesn’t disappoint me and little Jayden gets her shine on. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.
