The official trailer for Mulan was released yesterday and well….. I feel like you should just watch it before I even say anything.
About Mulan
When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Chinese Armyto defend the country from Huns, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing father. She is spirited, determined and quick on her feet. Disguised as a man by the name of Hua Jun, she is tested every step of the way and must harness her innermost strength and embrace her true potential.
My Reaction to the Official Trailer
So when I spoke about the Teaser trailer on The Brown Side of Disney, I already had feelings. We’ve long known there was going to be no Mushu and the rumors about the Phoenix replacing “the ancestors”. We also heard that all the original songs were going to be scratched. And I honestly JUST found out that Li Shag was not going to be in this movie. So while I think that Liu Yifei is beautiful, and also battles through both trailers like a BOSS, I can’t help but hold on to my childhood. And I did appreciate the beautiful instrumental version of reflections towards the end of the trailer.
I get it. There was a crapload of things in the animated Mulan that were controversial and insensitive. They went wrong in multiple ways. I understand Disney trying to come from a different angle of telling Mulan’s story “better”. But honestly, let’s get down to business (ha!) and call it what it is…… something else! This isn’t a remake, it’s a reimagining maybe. A retelling. It’s Mulan 2.0. Check out my live reaction with Shaye of Popcorn and Tequila on our new live show Pass that Popcorn.
How are you guys feeling about the new Mulan? Is it a no go for you?
Disney’s Mulan is in theaters everywhere March 27th, 2020!
