I probably repeat this a million times a day but the holiday season is my absolute favorite. I cannot wait for Christmas and I’m slowly but surely getting my kids excited about Santa and Christmas trees and all things Christmassy. 2018 is looking to be an amazing holiday season with so many new movies dropping this year but Disney’s The Nutcracker and the Four Realms has particularly caught my eye.
All Clara (Mackenzie Foy) wants is a key – a one-of-a-kind key that will unlock a box that holds a priceless gift. A golden thread, presented to her at godfather Drosselmeyer’s (Morgan Freeman) annual holiday party, leads her to the coveted key—which promptly disappears into a strange and mysterious parallel world. It’s there that Clara encounters a soldier named Phillip (Jayden Fowora-Knight), a gang of mice and the regents who preside over three Realms: Land of Snowflakes, Land of Flowers and Land of Sweets. Clara and Phillip must brave the ominous Fourth Realm, home to the tyrant Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren), to retrieve Clara’s key and hopefully return harmony to the unstable world. Starring Keira Knightley as the Sugar Plum Fairy, Disney’s new holiday feature film “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” is directed by Lasse Hallström and Joe Johnston, and inspired by E.T.A. Hoffmann’s classic tale.
The Nutcracker has been adapted and readapted and remade and performed more times than I can probably count. From Barbie, to the Carebears you have probably seen a version of this tale before. I am so excited because I have never seen it done like this. The cast of Disney’s The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is bursting with diversity and is taking this classic tale and elevating it to the next level.
I hate to go there but we’re living in such a crappy time. I try to be super conscientious of the things my kids absorb via online and even what they watch on tv. Children are so smart and it amazes me the way my son processes things in a way I don’t even imagine some time. So I am excited to see that this adaptation of the Nutcracker is being done so beautifully. It makes me happy to know that my son will be able to see himself in the soldier, or that it’s possible for little Clara (Marie) to have Morgan Freeman as her Godfather. Seeing ourselves depicted in such amazing and significant roles light up the eyes of children and adults alike. I marvel in amazement every single time I see Misty Copeland as the Ballerina.
Aside from the story in itself being a classic holiday tale, I’m looking forward to seeing another take from Disney (because do you remember the Mickey version?) and I’m loving all the live-action adaptations to films that we loved. Times are definitely changing and I’m excited that my children are going to love these classics in a whole different way than how we remembered them.
Are you excited to see the live-action film The Nutcracker and the Four Realms? Are you looking forward to the holiday season? Lets chat! xoxo
