Netflix’s latest original A Week Away released on Netflix and it was everything that I expected it to be. When I first saw the trailer for this movie I smiled the whole time! As someone who grew up in a Christian household and spent many years going to (and working at) “church camp” I was instantly excited. And if your familiar with my love for High School Musical, then it’s easy to see why right away.
A Week Away Synopsis
Troubled teen Will Hawkins (Kevin Quinn) has a run-in with the law that puts him at an important crossroad: go to juvenile detention or attend aChristian summer camp. At first a fish-out-of-water, Will opens his heart, discovers love with a camp regular (Bailee Madison), and sense of belonging in the last place he expected to find it.
Why This Movie is Worth the Watch
So I am going to be completely honest and say, you have to be a certain type of person to enjoy this movie. If you are looking for a deep plot or to find extreme meaning you’re going to be disappointed. The storyline for this movie is completely predictable. The movie is definitely cheeesy, but I still found it to be pretty enjoyable. Here are a few reason why the movie is still worth the watch.
- The soundtrack is pretty decent. – The movie is a musical so of course there are so many (random) burst into song moments. I definitely got High School Musical feels while i was watching (which makes sense because Bailee Madison and Kevin Quinn both have Disney roots).
- The whole family can enjoy this movie. – We are a family of musical lovers so even my 6 year old enjoyed this movie. There was nothing that made the movie inappropriate for the younger movie lovers.
- There are lessons we can all take away. Even with this being a faith based movie, you don’t have to be deeply religious to enjoy the messages A Week Away has to offer. We could all use a little more kindness, forgiveness, and self acceptance!
Will My Kids Enjoy A Week Away?
This is going to completely depend on your child. I would definitely say that the messages and storyline in the movie are pretty good for kids aged 10 and up. My 6 year old was excited about the movie mainly because Kevin Quinn was a lead. Even with him asking questions I am sure that some of the messages went completely over his head. Children that enjoy musicals will probably be into the soundtrack.
Overall, A Week Away was a cute movie for what it was supposed to be. I can definitely see myself rewatching when I am in the mood for something sweet and cheesy, but it’s not at the top of my rewatch playlist.
A Week Away is now available for streaming on Netflix.
